Well, it seems that Regice has finally found a bit of a niche to call its own. As a Dynamax Pokemon, Regice has a few actual advantages to its name; decently high bulk and a 0.5 second Fast Move in Lock-On. These two advantages come together to make a Pokemon that actually has some genuine value.
However, there are also a few issues. to mention. First up; Regice's bulk primarily comes from its Defense, meaning its Max Spirit won't heal anywhere near enough as something like Dynamax Blissey, so it will rely more on Max Guard. That said, it should still be enough in most cases. The other big issue is its lack of resistances and plethora of weaknesses. Ice is a very poor defensive typing, sporting only a single resistance to itself and weaknesses to a number of common types. And while it's true that Blissey and Zamazenta have a bit of a similar situation with no resistances and a plethora of neutral types, they can lean heavily on other advantages that Regice simply doesn't have. Add to that the fact that Regice also shares a weakness to the only type that Blissey and Zamazenta are weak to and it can be really tough justify an investment in a lesser version of them that only GENUINELY shines when facing down Ice Type moves.
In short: Dynamax Regice is a good pick for a bit of investment if:
◉ You lack a solid tank with a 0.5 second Fast Move
◉ You genuinely want a tank that can specifically handle Ice Type moves and/or handle moves that Ice isn't weak to
◉ You have a bunch of extra Regice candy and don't mind investing in something niche
If one or more of the above fit you, then go ahead and invest in Regice. If not, then don't bother.
Dynamax Roles
Low Attack and reliance on Lock-On which results in the Normal Type Max Strike means that Dynamax Regice really doesn't perform well offensively.
As stated, Dynamax Regice has outstanding defensive capabilities thanks to Lock-On and a great Defense stat that makes Max Guard VERY effective. In neutral scenarios or when facing down something using Ice Type movesets, then this really SHOULD be a 4/5 rating, but its Ice Type and the plethora of weaknesses/few resistances cut into its performance. Still, if you know that what you're facing doesn't have coverage that Regice fears, then this is a great tank.
That HP doesn't do Regice many favors.
Go for max Guard first and foremost. The HP buffer and team protection is extremely important for Dynamax Regice. After that you can invest in Max Spirit for those moments when Regice already has 3 shields and wants even more defensive capabilities.
Offensive
Defensive
- Lock-On is the key to success for Regice, allowing it to quickly build up to Max Spirit and Max Guard to keep itself and its team alive and healthy.
- Frost Breath can work if you're ABSOLUTELY DESPERATE for an Ice Type attacker, but don't. It's too slow, and Regice lacks the Attack to make Max Hailstorm work.
- ...PLEASE don't consider Rock Smash. Yes, you CAN use Max Knuckle with it, but please don't!
