Analysis
Dynamax Cannon's absolutely unholy power allows Eternatus to more than overcome the extremely heavy competition of Dragon attackers. This monster can even out-DPS Mega Rayquaza, and has surprisingly good defenses and some nice resistances as well, making it an outstanding Pokemon that has extremely high universal value.
This may not be the full extent of Eternatus's overwhelming power. In the main series, Eternatus has another Signature Move that evokes Eternamax Eternatus called Eternabeam, so it very well could see even more power in the future.
Bear in mind this Pokemon's extreme power up costs and rough compatibility with Rare Candy and Rare Candy XLs. Luckily, Eternatus does not need to be fully leveled up to be a monstrous raid attacker. To give a rough comparison, a Level 30 Eternatus is strong enough to slightly outperform a Level 50 Origin Forme Palkia, a sheer titanic feat.
Offense
- Dragon Tail and Dynamax Cannon* makes Eternatus an absolute titan of a Dragon attacker.
- Eternatus naturally comes with Dynamax Cannon, and the move also cannot be replaced.
- Poison Jab and Sludge Bomb makes Eternatus one of the best Poison Type attackers in the game, but Poison doesn't have many good targets.
- Flamethrower and Dragon Pulse are easy skips.
Eternatus doesn't have a very wide movepool, but it pretty much has exactly what it needs to succeed. Dragon Tail is a great fast move, sporting high damage output that's enhanced by STAB and good energy generation. This supports Dynamax Cannon, which hits like a truck for a relatively low energy cost, and Flamethrower for great coverage to compliment Dragon moves.
Eternatus can't join the fun of the Great League due to its high CP.
It should go without saying that Eternatus is an absolute monster in Dynamax Battles. This thing is the progenitor of the Dynamax Phenomenon, and it shows! Access to Dynamax Cannon allows Eternatus to absolutely tear through the competition, and act as a titanic counter to Dynamax Dragons. It's also an incredible option for helping out with soloing Dynamax Pokemon that take neutral damage from Dragon, which is a lot of Pokemon. Since Dynamax Cannon has the power of a G-Max move, it would take a Dragon with over 357 Attack to compete with its Max Move damage output using Max Wyrmwind, meaning nothing on the horizon has any hope of supplanting it.
Dynamax Roles
MASSIVE effective power from a type that has some of the best Pokemon in the game and the ability to boost that power and the power of other Dynamax/G-Max moves via its Dynamax Cannon Adventure Effect means that Eternatus has universal offensive utility, and would be a 6/5 in this rating if we had it.
Eternatus is bulky and has a great defensive typing. But, like we said before, its lack of a 0.5 second Fast Move means it generates energy slowly and launches Max Move at half the rate of other defenders. Still, it can drop a Max Guard alongside Dynamax Cannon to help the team out with solid defensive performance.
Eternamax Eternatus has an outstanding amount of HP, to the point where it's one of the best healers in the game. It's not on a par with Blissey, but it's still great in its own right.
As if the investment prospects weren't already bleak, Eternatus wants A LOT of investment in Max Move terms. Dynamax Cannon is a natural want, and Max Spirit heals a lot for some added benefits. Max Guard, however, is a bit risk due to the fact that it will redirect attacks towards Eternatus, which can be a problem if Eternatus doesn't have a tank to hind behind. Regardless, it's worthwhile if you're aiming for solos.
Offensive
Defensive
- Dragon Tail is generally the way to go, especially since Dynamax Cannon is the main reason to use it. Poison Jab can work too, but there's little advantage there even if Poison is Super Effective since Eternatus is stuck with the Max Move version of Dynamax Cannon, and keeping Dragon Tail keeps more utility for Eternatus in non-Dynamax battles.
- Using Eternatus defensively is generally not recommended despite its fantastic bulk, as it lacks a 0.5s Fast Attack to contribute well to the Max Meter.
