While Mega Mewtwo Y was the original vision of the apex of power for Pokemon Go, Mega Mewtwo X has always been seen as a bit of a mixed bag... and that bag is getting less and less mixed as power-creep makes its potential utility drop more and more. The addition of Counter to its moveset would have made it a HUGE DEAL back in 2016, but now... well...

Here's the problem with Mega Mewtwo X: at first glance it seems like it could be genuinely good. It has a high Attack stat and movesets for both of its types, making it a a jack of all trades, master of none. And while that IS somewhat valid, it's just not realistic in practice. Mega Mewtwo X is out-classed in both of its types, making investing in it instead of Mega Mewtwo Y or Mega Lucario a use of resources that's a bit lower in value at the moment. But what about that double-duty idea? Can Mega Mewtwo X redeem itself through being the option that can save resources in that way? Sadly, no. The only way that Mega Mewtwo X can act as a Fighting Type attacker is if it's packing Counter, which is an Elite Move. This means that it's not really a viable option to switch between the two moves on the fly.

All of that said, is Mega Mewtwo X objectively bad? No. This thing has high average TDO and high DPS as a Fighting Type. However, it's a step down from Mega Lucario in terms of DPS and has similar average TDO when taking into account Mega Lucario's Steel typing and its plethora of resistances. It's definitely very solid, but it's also not quite up to par.

But here's a question: does Mega Mewtwo X have potential for a better future?

Yes. Very yes.

In the main series, Mewtwo has access to Aura Sphere. This attack is even stronger than Psystrike, to the point where Mega Mewtwo X it could out-DPS its Y variant someday. In fact, it could have a DPS on a par with Mega Lucario Y, with a TDO that can out-pace it even when Mega Lucario Z has a resistance and Mega Mewtwo X doesn't. If this comes to pass, Mega Mewtwo X would definitely be a strong contender for the title of the best Fighting Type attacker in the game, and one of the best Mega Evolutions in the game.

In general, it's best to use Mega Mewtwo X as a Fighting Type, so Counter* will tend to be the best fast move. That aside, Confusion is the Fast Move of choice in neutral scenarios or when Psychic is Super Effective. Psycho Cut works best when Psychic is resisted or the target has a double-weakness to Mega Mewtwo X's non-Fighting/Psychic Charged Move, and is easier to dodge with... though if you're going to try to go the generalist route, then Mega Mewtwo Y is objectively better.

  • Counter* pairs with Focus Blast to make Mega Mewtwo X's overall best moveset.... that isn't done better by Mega Mewtwo Y.
  • Confusion with Psystrike* makes Mega Mewtwo X... Mega Mewtwo Y, but worse. Psycho Cut has lower damage, but it allows for an easier time with dodging. Psychic is a viable option for those who do not have the Elite TM to teach it Psystrike.
  • Flamethrower, Ice Beam, Thunderbolt, and Shadow Ball* should pair with Psycho Cut or Confusion for the situations listed above. When in doubt, just default to Psycho Cut due to its higher energy generation and easier dodging... and use Mega Mewtwo Y instead.
  • Hyper Beam* is an easy-skip.
