Thanks to its excellent overall stats, Metagross is a wonderful all-arounder choice in Max Battles. Whether you want to fire off a Max Attack or defend/support your team with Max Guard, Metagross can flexibly adapt to either role much better than most Pokemon in the early metagame. Metagross is also a contender to remain useful in the Dynamax meta, as well. Though Crowned Zacian and Zamazenta tend to outclass Metagross in multiple areas, it's still a fantastic choice for those who cannot get their hands on the Legendary heroes.

Attacker4/5

A strong option for Steel and Psychic alike with the ability to moonlight in Bug and Ghost, Dynamax Metagross has a strong offensive presence with great coverage.

Defender3/5

Metagross really wants to be an all-arounder, taking on the roles of Attacker and Defender alike. however, in order to properly defend, it needs to run either Fury Cutter or Shadow Claw for maximum energy generation, which are moves that it's not as effective with. Still, this thing is pretty bulky and has a great defensive typing, so it can DEFINITELY act as a strong tank with genuine utility and/or a strong Pokemon that can take the field once your main tank drops.

Healer1/5

Sub-200 HP isn't great, but it can be utilized as a backup defensive option.

The priority here depends on what role you want Dynamax Metagross to play. If you want a strong attacker, then Max Move damage is the priority. If you want a semi-situational tank, then Max Guard is the way to go. Regardless, Max Spirit is useful, but the lowest priority.

  • Bullet Punch is obviously the main move of choice if you're going for launching Max Steelspike.
  • Zen Headbutt is the way to go for Max Mindstorm.
  • If you want to go for some Bug Type damage, then stick with Fury Cutter to drop Max Flutterby.
  • Shadow Claw* can also work for Max Phantasm, but the fact that it's an Elite move reduces Metagross' flexibility substantially. Still, if you have a good Dynamax Metagross that you intend to utilize in the Master League, then it's a great option for a defensive build!
  • For a more supportive build, Fury Cutter and Shadow Claw* are the way to go for Max Move energy, thus letting it use Max Guard/Max Spirit more frequently.
