Way back when Pokemon Go was released in 2016, there was one Pokemon that cast a long and dark shadow over the metagame; Mega Mewtwo Y. At that time, Mega Mewtwo Y was slated to become THE strongest thing to ever exist. Had this thing dropped a few years earlier, then it would have centralized the entire game around its tremendous power. A Psycho Cut/Shadow Ball Mega Mewtwo Y would have been THE choice for every raid that didn't resist it. But how does it fare nowadays?
Well.. it's good. Really good. While Mega Mewtwo Y may not be the centralizing force that it was once expected to be, and there are now things even stronger than it in the game, Mega Mewtwo Y IS the harbinger of the great revival of the once-dominant Psychic Type and a Mega Evolution on a par with the greatest Mega Evolutions in the game to date. With a stellar moveset and DEVASTATINGLY high Attack stat, this thing is now the strongest thing in the Psychic metagame and a very strong generalist as well. In short, you're going to want a Mega Mewtwo Y on your team.
Offense
Confusion is the Fast Move of choice in neutral scenarios or when Psychic is Super Effective. Psycho Cut works best when Psychic is resisted or the target has a double-weakness to Mega Mewtwo Y's non-Psychic Charged Move, and is easier to dodge with.
- Confusion with Psystrike* makes Mega Mewtwo Y one of the objectively strongest things in the entire game, and is this Pokemon's biggest claim to fame. Psycho Cut has lower damage, but it allows for an easier time with dodging.
- Flamethrower, Ice Beam, Thunderbolt, and Shadow Ball* should pair with Psycho Cut or Confusion for the situations listed above. When in doubt, just default to Psycho Cut due to its higher energy generation and easier dodging.
- Counter* can pair with Focus Blast for an okay-ish pseudo-Fighting Type. Mega Mewtwo X is better in this role, but it has a set of problems of its own....
- Hyper Beam* is an easy-skip, and Return* should be TMed away... but please don't purify your Shadow Mewtwo.
