Mega Mewtwo Y Raid Guide

Mega Mewtwo Y Raid Guide

Here it is. After just short of 10 years since the release of Pokemon Go, the once-and-former expected ultimate Pokemon of the game has at long last alighted and given us access to the once and former fevered dream of the raiders of yester-year.

Mega Mewtwo Y may not be the centralizing force it was once expected to be, but this thing is still among the absolute strongest Pokemon in the game, boasting the second highest Attack stat in the game to date after Deoxys - Attack Forme, surprisingly high raw bulk, and a deadly moveset. This thing is so strong that it can stand as a viable Mega Evolution even when playing off-type with Ice Beam or Thunderbolt. It's also the harbinger of a new era for Psychic Types, able to compete with just about any other Mega Evolution directly and frequently come out on top when Psychic is a weakness that can be exploited.

So we've covered just how powerful this thing is, but how hard is it to obtain? The answer is... very. Mega Mewtwo Y is a perfect storm of general difficulty. First up; this thing has an obscene 413 Attack and some very powerful moves, including Confusion, which threatens to quickly farm down MANY would-be counters fairly quickly with its high base power. But let's be honest; even Psycho Cut stings coming off of that gargantuan Attack stat, and its massive pool of Charged Move coverage makes it potentially extremely dangerous beyond even that. Second: Mega Mewtwo Y is what was once colloquially referred to as a Tier 6 raid, meaning it has 22,500 HP instead of the 15,000 of basic Tier 5 Legends. This means it's very bulky, and that's compounded by its gimmick of needing to be faced by a Mega Evolution in order to truly challenge it. Third: it takes 7,500 energy to Mega Evolve Mewtwo, meaning it can take at least 30 raids to add it to your team if your raid groups manage to score the maximum 250 energy per raid. Meaning this is not only a game of attrition, it's also a game of raw numbers and potentially even a bit of Pokecoin sink for many of us

Build your team, Bring a strong Mega Evolution, pray for good weather (but let's be honest; Fog is pretty rare for the majority of the player-base), activate Behemoth Blade or Behemoth Bash, and gather a group of 4-6 players who know what they're doing.

We're putting a bit more of an emphasis on mega evolutions this time around, as they're needed to take down Mega Mewtwo Y's defenses and pave the way for better performance.

In-game Search string

Mega Tyranitar is arguably the top pick for this raid. It can break through the Mega gimmick, hits hard, and double-resists Confusion, Psycho Cut, and Psychic while also resisting Flamethrower. It REALLY doesn't want to face down a Focus Blast, but that only shows up 20% of the time and charges slowly, so it's worth the risk. Add to that high raw bulk, and you've got a real winner for this raid.

Mega Absol can generally compete with the big-names here in terms of DPS, but its lower TDO makes it a bit less of a top pick in this particular raid. It's unlikely to survive a Charged Move outside of Psychic without dodging, giving it more in common with Mega Gengar than Mega Tyranitar here. But at least it can take a Confusion on the chin a bit better!

We basically have to put Mega Gengar up here due to its virtually unparalleled raw power.... but it's risky here. It can't tank Confusion very well, and may even drop before Mega Mewtwo Y can even throw out a Charged Move. It can put in better work against Psycho Cut, but even that is going to leave a bit of a mark thanks to Mega Gengar's Poison sub-typing. You're going to need to play Mega Gengar carefully, but if you hit the right Mega Mewtwo Y moveset, it's a damage-dealing juggernaut.

Having access to Super Effective damage and a Psychic sub-typing is a major boon for this raid, and Dawn Wings Necrozma does not disappoint. Its typing is outstanding for this raid, resisting Psychic Type moves and not particularly fearing any of Mega Mewtwo Y's Charged Moves since it can't use Elite Moves as a raid boss, meaning no Shadow Ball. Add to that outstanding Ghost Type damage output, and you've got one of the absolute best things for this raid beyond a doubt.

Shadow Tyranitar has all of the advantages of Mega Tyranitar (minus the Mega effect), but dialed back a bit. It's OBJECTIVELY great, but we've already covered its advantages.

Shadow Hydreigon compounds the normal double-resistance to Psychic with an additional resistance to Thunderbolt and Flamethrower, but it also has to watch out for Ice Beam alongside the same Focus Blast that threatens most other Dark Types.

Oh Darkrai, will you EVER get Dark Void? ....probably not until Mega Darkrai drops in 4-5 years.
Regardless, Shadow Darkrai still has a very commanding presence here, using the advantages of being a vanilla Dark Type alongside strong damage output to carve its niche.

Mega Houndoom is a great backup option in the event that you're missing the big-names above, and its Fire typing gives it valuable resistances to Ice and Fire without adding more relevant weaknesses. It's not the best, but it puts in work!

Lunala is basically Dawn Wings Necrozma, but a bit worse. That said, it's strong in its own right and can utilize that Psychic resist to drop some strong Shadow Balls!

Shadow Mewtwo brings back the old-fashioned playstyle of the early days of Pokemon Go: build up energy with Psycho Cut, drop crushingly strong Shadow Balls. If you don't already have a Shadow Mewtwo with Shadow Ball, it MAY be worth considering adding a second move and dropping an Elite TM to give it that plus Psystrike, but there are genuinely better Ghost Type damage dealers nowadays. Still, it may be a better and cheaper option than raising a 5th or 6th slot mediocre Ghost or Dark Type specifically for this raid.

High generalist performance plus great natural bulk means Shadow Regigigas can definitely show up for this raid, though it's going to need Ghost, Dark, or Bug for its Hidden Power type to be effective.

Who needs Super Effective damage when you've got great overall raw power and bulk?
Eternatus is a great overall option, but its performance is going to flip around depending on Mega Mewtwo Y's moveset. If it's facing down Psycho Cut, it should largely be okay so long as it's not taking a Psychic or Ice Beam to the face. If it's facing down Confusion, it's not going to be able to leverage that bulk very well.

We have to put at least one Mega bug on this list, and this is our pick!
Mega Pinsir has the advantage of... um.... being a bug, having a sub-typing that doesn't give it a weakness to Confusion (though it DOES have weaknesses to Ice Beam and Thunderbolt), and being a Mega Evolution to help with the Mega gimmick... and that's about it. It's worth considering when it's rainy or as a filler, and that's the end of the story.

We've already basically covered this thing twice. Suffice to say it's Shadow Tyranitar, but with less DPS. Still great, though.

A bit outclassed these days, but Giratina - Origin Forme still has a very good overall performance that warrants its use.

Shadow Hydreigon, but less DPS.
