Analysis
The Shadow boost has given Trevenant a new lease on life... or rather unlife, in this case. It's now... okay. If you lack a Ghost Type raid team, then it can definitely put in some work. However, the high cost of raising it generally makes its investment a bit less than ideal.
Offense
- Shadow Claw and Shadow Ball is the best moveset that Shadow Trevenant can muster, allowing it to work as an okay Ghost Type attacker.
- Sucker Punch and Foul Play can work for a Dark moveset, but it has nearly identical coverage when compared to Ghost and has less power.
- Seed Bomb is an okay-ish move, but Shadow Trevenant's lack of a Grass Type Fast Move makes it non-viable.
Defense
- Shadow Claw is the better Fast Move for defense due to STAB.
- Sucker Punch should be TM'd if possible.
- Seed Bomb performs the best on defense due to its more frequent use as a 3-bar move.
- Foul Play balances a mix of damage output and dodgability.
- Shadow Ball deals the most damage to attackers but also has the slowest damage window.
Shadow Claw has faster energy generation than Sucker Punch, but lower power post STAB.
Seed Bomb is preferred for its lesser energy cost, making it useful for baiting shields, as well as its Grass-type coverage which is backed by STAB. Shadow Ball is a powerful move that hits hard with STAB and is largely unresisted in the overall meta. Foul Play is also an option here, though its extremely similar effectiveness profile to Shadow Ball leaves Shadow Trevenant a bit less effective offensively.
Shadow Trevenant is relatively unique as a Ghost/Grass Pokemon, resulting in an interesting mix of weaknesses and resistances. While its bulk is nothing special compared to popular meta picks, Shadow Trevenant's strength largely comes from its strong moveset. Access to one of the best Fast Moves in the game in the form of Shadow Claw, with STAB, is a very good perk to have. Shadow Ball with STAB is very strong and largely unresisted, while Seed Bomb is a decent move that can both bait shields and provide useful coverage. Shadow Trevenant's offensive threat in all even-shielding situations makes it a good consistent pick overall, though it can be hard walled by Normal and Dark Pokemon quite easily.
