Analysis
Darkrai has always been a strong Pokemon that was just a bit below the top-tier options into Ghost and Psychic Types, but just a bit too low on the list to be top-tier. Well, times have changed, and the rise of Shadow Darkrai has come at last.
Shadow Darkrai is a fantastic Pokemon that sits near the top of the counter-list wherever it's Super Effective. Between its Dark typing, which is one of the best types when countering Psychic and Ghost Types, and its great moveset, it's here to drop some heavy damage. However, 'near' the top is a bit of an issue here, as monsters like Options Dawn Wings Necrozma and Mega Gengar exist. The silver medal in this case is a pretty big step down, though not TOO far for it to be great. And Shadow Darkrai does have one more trick up its sleeve; while all of the current top-tier options have largely put their cards on the table already, Darkrai still has a Dark Type Signature Move by the name of Dark Void that it could draw from. And given how powerful some Signature Moves can be, Shadow Darkrai could very well become an absolute monster.... if they make it an Elite move instead of Exclusive so that Shadow Darkrai can freely get it.
As it sits, Shadow Darkrai is arguably the best counter to Ghost and Psychic Types in the game outside of the absolute titans mentioned above. It has all of the DPS of the big-name Ghosts like Shadow Gengar and Shadow Chandelure, but a better typing for most raids and higher average TDO to put it into a better average position.
Offense
- Snarl is better than Feint Attack.
- Shadow Ball is great, perfect for Shadow Darkrai's role as a Dark / Ghost attacker.
- Dark Pulse is slightly weaker, even with STAB, but it can perform better in very specific scenarios due to an early damage window.
- Focus Blast has poor type-synergy on Shadow Darkrai and should be TM'd.
- Sludge Bomb* has no use on Shadow Darkrai.
Snarl offers high energy generation, allowing Shadow Darkrai to throw out Shadow Ball frequently, complete with its good neutral coverage and high damage profile. Back this up with Focus Blast to deal with opposing Dark Types, and you've got literally perfect coverage in 2 fast moves; EVERY Pokemon in the game takes at least neutral damage from Ghost and Fighting.... save Hisuian Zoroark and its pre-evolution.
Shadow Darkrai's CP is a bit too high for the Great League, even with the worst possible IVs.
