For much of Pokemon GO's history, the thought of a viable Normal attacker is blasphemous simply due to the massive damage gap between super effective and neutral moves - and this game has plenty of wonderful type specialists to shred every possible Raid boss. All this changed upon the release of Regigigas's extremely overpowered signature move, Crush Grip.
Wielding a monstrous attack stat and the sheer power of the Shadow boost, Regigigas's Crush Grip grants the progenitor of the legendary giants enough raw DPS to go toe to toe with some of the game's top type specialists. This can be pushed a step further with the appropriate Hidden Power type and Partly Cloudy weather. To give an example of this unhinged damage output, a Partly Cloudy Hidden Power Ground + Crush Grip Shadow Regigigas has greater DPS than Shadow Groudon against Electric-type bosses!
Even if you're lacking the appropriate Hidden Power type, a Zen Headbutt + Crush Grip Shadow Regigigas is still strong enough to act as a top counter to many Pokemon. Still, Shadow Regigigas isn't perfect. Many pokemon - especially those featured during GO Fest and GO Tour - tend to be preferable to Shadow Regigigas, leaving it in a position where its best overall performance is if its Hidden Power is one of the more middling types, where it can dominate much of the competition. But even then, this thing can slot into teams of some of the strongest types in the game and still put in genuinely good performance... assuming the raid boss doesn't resist Crush Grip. The fact that it's so incredibly variable in regards to what it even can counter given its reliance on Hidden Power also holds it back
Basically, Shadow Regigigas is a monster with a unique niche depending on its Hidden Power, and can be a top-tier attacker, but it's not a necessary part of every raid team. Good luck getting the Hidden Power type(s) that you're aiming for!
Offense
- Hidden Power is more useful than Zen Headbutt as long as a relevant typing can be obtained. Zen Headbutt, however, has a shorter duration, which can be more useful in Party Play.
- A notable mention goes to Hidden Power Rock, due to it also being boosted in Partly Cloudy.
- The Elite move Crush Grip is THE reason to run Regigigas. Its parameters surpass some of the game's most powerful Charged Attacks, allowing Regigigas to effectively bypass the type chart with raw power.
- Giga Impact is a great move, but it is far behind Crush Grip in performance.
- Focus Blast and Thunder are underwhelming.
Hidden Power isn't the best move option in general for PvP, but its performance here is far more worthwhile than Zen Headbutt, and its variable typing can be useful for select matchups. Crush Grip has a reasonable energy cost, and an insane amount of raw power behind it, making it the must-have move for Shadow Regigigas. Meanwhile, Thunder and Focus Blast are primarily here for coverage.
