Mega Mewtwo X Raid Guide
Mega Mewtwo X: the lesser Mewtwo Mega Evolution when it comes to Pokemon Go raids... for the time being. This thing is still a tremendous threat to raiders, sporting the same coverage as its Y variant, though its damage output on everything save Focus Blast is lower. Don't be fooled by its "lesser" status: Mega Mewtwo X still hits extremely hard and can take down many would-be counters with ease.
But just how worthwhile is it to raid Mega Mewtwo X? ....well, that's a complicated question. Mega Mewtwo X is arguably a step down from Mega Lucario, and it can't really pull double-duty due to Counter being an Elite move. This puts it in sort of a silver-medal position where it's great, but not really great. However, if you have faith in the future, then it might be worth gambling a bit. This is because all Mewtwo formes COULD get Aura Sphere someday. And if they do, then Mega Mewtwo X will become a threat that can directly compete with the future Mega Lucario Z, will have higher neutral DPS than its Y variant, and will become one of the of the strongest things in the game with ease.
But what if you want to try for the X variant? Well, this thing takes an obscene 7,500 energy, and each Mega Evolution has its own unique Mega Energy, so be ready to raid VERY HARD and spend a lot of raid passes to unlock it, especially if your goal is to get both variants of Mega Mewtwo. In the end, our general recommendation is to focus on Mega Mewtwo Y, and only aim for Mega Mewtwo X if you've got a lot of extra raid passes and time. Keep in mind that Mega Mewtwo X will likely be back in 6-8 months, and you can get at least SOME Mega Mewtwo X energy by walking a Mewtwo that's already had its Y variant unlocked, so don't let the fear of missing out push you too hard!
Supreme Counters
This is PROBABLY the biggest advantage that raiding Mega Mewtwo X has over Mega Mewtwo Y: a Super Effective Mega Rayquaza. This thing remains one of the absolute top raiders in the game, and it has a GREAT mix of DPS and TDO (when not facing Ice Beam). This thing is THE top counter here, and can also cut into Mega Mewtwo X's Mega gimmick with ease.
Dawn Wings Necrozma is an outstandingly powerful Pokemon, and it works wonders here. A resistance to Psycho Cut and especially Confusion is always valuable, and the fact that it doesn't truly fear any of Mega Mewtwo X's Charged Moves makes it an outstanding universal pick here.
Shadow Moltres has a great showing here, hitting hard with Flying Type damage and fearing little from Mega Mewtwo X outside of Thunderbolt.
Mega Rayquaza isn't the only green dragon of the stratosphere that works wonders here. While it's a bit frail and will be outright deleted if Mega Mewtwo X is packing Ice Beam, it's still a great overall pick.
Pray for Psycho Cut.
Seriously; Mega Gengar is a risky pick here. It has great DPS and solid general TDO, but it's not going to be on the field very long if it's facing down Confusion. It also triple-resists Focus Blast, so this thing CAN be optimal if you're facing down Psycho Cut/Focus Blast. If you're using Mega Gengar, front-load it so that it can hopefully stay on the field for as long as possible, and pay attention to energy generation: if you're against Confusion, it will probably drop to the first Charged Move. If you're REALLY close to being able to launch Shadow Ball, dodge and let it rip. If not, it's probably better to let the poor ghost rest to not tank your average DPS.
Using Mewtwo with Shadow Ball to counter Mewtwo; older players will definitely recognize this matchup!
A resistance to Psychic Type moves and no real fear of any Charged Move is great, and its overall power is EXTREMELY high. This is a definite winner that CAN out-pace Mega Rayquaza when Ice Beam is a threat, but on the whole it's still a backup option.
Mega Gardevoir is the premier Fairy Type, boasting a great overall performance here that can be optimal in the relatively common Cloudy weather, depending on where you live. It resists Psychic Type moves and double-resists Focus Blast without really fearing anything that Mega Mewtwo X can throw at it.
Mega Mewtwo X is basically Mega Mewtwo Y... but worse. It has all of the same advantages of its Y variant, but it also loses its resistance to Psycho Cut, Confusion, and Psychic while also dealing less damage.
....the REAL question is this; if you already have Mega Mewtwo X, why on earth are you raiding it even more...?
While its real fame comes from its Steel performance, Zacian's Crowned Sword forme has the performance to pose a definite threat to Mega Mewtwo X. The one problem here being that you'll need to unlock its second Charged Move to make it useful.... oh, and it doesn't like Flamethrower.
This is basically baby Dawn Wings Necrozma, but it's still got great performance!
