Ah, Mega Starmie... this is an odd one; for years, Mega Starmie was one of the Pokemon that a lot of people hoped to see someday because base Starmie has what is generally considered to be one of the more majestic designs among all Pokemon. So naturally people thought that Mega Starmie would be something downright glorious to behold! Instead, we got a literal walking meme. Oh well, it just goes to show; when you find notoriety in basically any way, it's important to firmly grasp it.

So how exactly does Mega Starmie perform in Pokemon Go? Well, let's go over it: This is a Pokemon with over 275 Attack, right? Yup. And 275 Attack is one of the benchmarks for at least passable performance in the PvE meta? Yup. So based on that logic, Mega Starmie is at least decent, right? Makes sense to me. Then we should rate it higher on our tier list! Nope, Mega Starmie isn't great. This is due to three factors:

  • In Legends Z-A, Mega Starmie had an artificially boosted Attack stat due to its planned ability for the main series as a whole: Huge Power, which doubles a Pokemon's Attack stat. But since we don't have abilities in Pokemon Go, we're stuck with it amended Attack stat, which is substantially lower.
  • Mega Starmie lacks a genuinely good moveset to capitalize on its Attack stat.
  • Even if it got its Z-A stat-line and outstanding Water and Psychic moves, Mega Starmie still faces insurmountable competition in both of its types.

Yeah, even Mega Sharpedo out-paces Mega Starmie's power as a Water Type DPS-wise, and it's really bad as a Psychic Type... especially since it's releasing not long after Mega Mewtwo Y dropped. In the end, this thing is best used as an early-game Mega and/or a Candy farmer for Water/Psychic, two relatively common types to see involved in events. But, at the end of the day, we can easily summarize this whole thing by asking one question: Is this a good Mega Evolution? No, this is Mega Starmie.

  • Water Gun and Surf is the way to go for Mega Starmie.
  • Psywave and Psybeam is.... a thing.
