Gigantamax Grimmsnarl is an interesting case; it's one of only two Dark Type Gigantamax Pokemon, with the other being Gigantamax Urshifu - Single Strike Style. This gives it a substantial power-boost to its Dark Type Max Move when compared to other Dark Type Dynamax Pokemon, which helps to mitigate its unimpressive Attack stat. In fact, Gigantamax Grimmsnarl throwing out G-Max Snooze is about on a par with other Dark Types using Max Darkness from an Attack stat of about 291, so this thing is very respectable!

Well, yes and no. In a vacuum, Gigantamax Grimmsnarl is a solid pick that can definitely put in work where and when called for. However, when put into the context of the current meta, it can definitely come up lacking. First up is its offensive performance which, while good, has major competition. This is due to the fact that Ghost and Dark have nearly identical coverage profiles, meaning Grimmsnarl isn't just competing within its own type, it's also fighting against the big-name Ghosts; namely Gigantamax Gengar, which it cannot hold a candle to, offensively speaking. While it's true that Grimmsnarl's superior defensive typing means it will have more staying power in general, especially when compared to Gengar's notorious weakness to just about everything that it wants to counter, that really doesn't matter here. Regardless of the case, the play is to put either Pokemon behind a bulky wall, so those weaknesses will amost never matter. Add to that the fact that the aforementioned Gigantamax Urshifu - Single Strike is on the horizon and the fact that Dynamax Urshifu is already here, and it can become hard to justify using Grimmsnarl.

This thing is still very much worth using, and will have utility that surpasses Gigantamax Gengar when/if we get Dynamax Pokemon that are Normal/Ghost or Normal/Psychic Type, but for now it's a silver medal at best in its role.

Attacker4/5

If you can get through the above issues with being out-classed in areas, Gigantamax Grimmsnarl is still a very strong Gigantamax Attacker with higher survivability, which we will cover more in the Defender section next to this.

Defender2/5

Gigantamax Grimmsnarl can actually do some situational tanking. With double-resistances to Dragon, Psychic, and Dark, alongside a normal resistance to Ghost and 0.5 second Fast Move options, there are definitely raids where this thing can excel. It's also going to tend to survive A LOT better than Gengar if your main tank drops, which gives it some additional utility in high-level/Gigantamax raids.

Healer1/5

That HP stat isn't great, and isn't going to do a whole lot.

G-Max Snooze first, then Max Guard for situational defensive play and/or solo runs. Just keep in mind that using Max Guard redirects attacks to Gigantamax Grimmsnarl, so be careful with when you use it in high level play. Max Spirit can have some utility, but it's less important here.

Situational
Situational
  • Bite is generally the best move choice here due to its short attacking window.
  • Sucker Punch is fine as well, but ever so slightly weaker.
  • Low Kick can work on defense if you really want to, but if something isn't weak to Dark then there are better options than Gigantamax Grimmsnarl.
