Analysis
Terrakion was long looked to as the potential future king of both Rock and Fighting-types. It had the potential to be a very large force in the meta that could re-shape numerous matchups moving forward and take the game by storm. But then Rampardos was given a shockingly outstanding moveset and Terrakion itself wasn't given the Fighting-type moves that it needed to surpass the Fighting-type king...
...Up until August 31, 2022, where Terrakion was finally granted a Fighting-type Fast Attack in Double Kick. Combined with Sacred Sword's incredible parameters, Terrakion now claims the throne as the premier Fighting attacker, surpassing even the likes of Lucario and Shadow Machamp. However, Terrakion does occasionally show hints of mortality, as its partial Rock typing can hinder it with weaknesses that the other Fighting-type competitors don't have to worry about.
Terrakion's is a decent choice for a Rock-type attacker, although it often finds itself outclassed. It has DPS that's substantially lower than Rampardos, similar to Rock Wrecker Rhyperior, but with far lower TDO. Its one advantage in this regard is that it does not have any double weaknesses.
Offense
- Sacred Sword* is an excellent move, and should be paired with Double Kick to make Terrakion an extremely powerful Fighting attacker. In the event that Sacred Sword is unavailable, Close Combat can be used, but its performance is significantly worse.
- Smack Down should be paired with Rock Slide to make Terrakion a very potent Rock Type attacker
- Zen Headbutt is not worth considering.
- Earthquake serves no purpose on Terrakion and waste its potential.
Double Kick grants Terrakion the energy generation to make full use of its strong STAB combination and excellent Charged Attacks. Smack Down is decent but its low energy gain does combine well with its good Charged Attacks. Zen Headbutt is horrendous.
more-verticalplus
Sacred Sword is a cheap and highly efficient attack, making up for Smack Down's low energy gain. Rock Slide is necessary for its coverage, and sports a high 1.667 DPE (Damage Per Energy) backed by STAB. Close Combat has a greater damage potential than Sacred Sword, but is difficult to use reliably due to Terrakion's frailty and Smack Down's low energy gain. Earthquake is very expensive and generally does not offer Terrakion meaningful coverage.
Currently Terrakion can only be obtained from raids, which means its high CP makes it impossible for Terrakion to compete in Great League. Maybe in the future Terrakion will be featured in Research Breakthrough.
