The Great Ghost rises once again! Gigantamax Gengar is a monstrous Dynamax option, dealing huge Ghost Type damage thanks to Max Phantasm's boosted Max Move power. It's also in a fairly safe position long-term, as it has the second highest Attack stat of any Gigantamax Pokemon, falling behind only Gigantamax Inteleon by one point. It also has very limited direct competition that's likely to show up in the future, so this is definitely a safe investment. In fact, Gigantamax Gengar spitting out G-Max Terror is on a par with a Ghost Type with about 335 Attack using Max Phantasm. Yeah, let that sink in.
So let me ask you a question: what is the one problem that Gengar has ALWAYS had in Pokemon Go? That's right; the fact that it's a Ghost Type attacker that's weak to both Ghost and Psychic.... well, GUESS WHAT?! The Dynamax meta is a MASSIVE breath of fresh air for this poisonous ghost, because now it can sit behind a tank and only come out to say BOO when it's time to attack before slinking back into the shadows! The afterlife is GOOOOD for Gigantamax Gengar, and every other Gengar looks to it with jealousy. And for added value, if you happen to get a REALLY GOOD Gigantamax Gengar, you can also turn it into Mega Gengar to use in other metas! Man, things just keep getting BETTER AND BETTER for Gigantamax Gengar!
Dynamax Roles
The only possible thing that COULD dethrone Gigantamax Gengar in the future is Calyrex - Shadow Rider, and ONLY if it gets something better than Max Phantasm, which it doesn't have in the Main Series. Either that or some sort of an Adventure Effect that puts it over the top. Regardless, Gigantamax Gengar is currently a VERY safe investment for top counter to Ghosts and Psychics forever.
Gigantamax Gengar has a bit of a defensive niche thanks to its triple-resistance to Fighting Type movesets, as stated above. However, common coverage moves, in particular Dark Type moves, can end its defensive career quickly.
That HP is WAY too low to be worthwhile for healing.
Max out G-Max Terror, then MAYBE put a bit into Max Guard if you really want to tank some Ghost/Normal hits.
Offensive
Defensive
- Lick* and Shadow Claw both have STAB and quickly generate energy, making both ideal moves on offense or defense, though the fact that all moves lead to G-Max Terror means that it doesn't make a huge difference.
- If you want to try for defense against Fighting or Normal Types, Lick* and Shadow Claw are both fine.
