Gengar was the first Ghost Type Dynamax Pokemon, and it can definitely put in numbers. Its relatively low bulk and weaknesses to Psychic and Ghost, the two types that it's supposed to counter, can be a bit of a liability in most game modes. But here it doesn't matter, as Gengar will be hiding behind a tank 99% of the time! Still, it's unlikely that we'll see much big competition for Dynamax Gengar in the near future... except for Gigantamax Gengar....

...which got released merely a little over a week after Dynamax Gengar's release, so regular Dynamax Gengar's just plain outclassed now. However, Dynamax Gengar remains a strong option for those unable to get their hands on a Gigantamax Gengar, and it has the TEENY TINY advantage of being able to utilize Max Darkness instead of a Ghost Type Max Move.... so that's nice once every couple of years or so, when we get a Normal/Psychic or Normal/Ghost Type in the rotation.

It's also worth noting that a Dynamax or Gigantamax Gengar can also be used for Mega Gengar in normal raids, so there's a fair bit of role compression potential here.

Attacker4/5

Not up to par with its Gigantamax forme, but still great!

Defender2/5

Like its Gigantamax forme, Dynamax Gengar can do some tanking when its typing comes into play, mainly against Normal and especially Fighting Types, but outside of those scenarios it really shouldn't take to the field if it can avoid it, and generally isn't a good idea most of the time.

Healer1/5

155 HP is pretty abysmal for a healer.

Buffing Max Move damage is the main priority, with maybe a bit into Max Guard for solo runs if you're so inclined, or for special cases where you want to tank moves. Just keep in mind that if your main tank is down and Gengar is on the field, using Max Guard will redirect attacks to Gengar, actually eating into its survivability instead of helping.

  • Lick* and Shadow Claw both have STAB and quickly generate energy, making both ideal moves on offense or defense.
  • Sucker Punch works if you're dead-set on using Max Darkness instead.
  • If you want to go the tanking route against Fighting Types, then Lick* and Shadow Claw are both fine here.
