Lugia has long been one of the great walls of Pokemon Go; a behemoth that combines a good HP stat with an outstanding Defense stat. This thing is a natural pick for a defensive Dynamax option, and is definitely one of the best defensive/supportive Pokemon in the Dynamax meta... right?

Well, not really. Despite the fact that Dynamax Lugia is a defensive monster, it has a few issues. First and foremost is the fact that it lacks a 0.5 second Fast Move, meaning it's going to reach its Max Move a fair bit slower than the competition. Then there's the competition; with supportive monsters like Crowned Shield Zamazenta, Dynamax Blissey, and Gigantamax Snorlax, all of which have superior defensive and supportive capabilites in general, it can be hard to justify the high cost of raising a legendary Pokemon for this role. That said, it does have the massive advantage of double-resisting Fighting Type moves, which Snorlax, Blissey, and Zamazenta are weak to, so it can work as a fantastic defensive compliment to these two, even if it is a bit slower.

If Dynamax Lugia ever gets access to a 0.5 second Fast Move, it will definitely see a rise in our tier list. But for the time being, it's a bit of an under-performer.

  • Dragon Tail and Extrasensory are both viable Fast Move options, so use whichever is more effective for a given raid.
