Dynamax Ho-oh is a bit of a sad case. This thing had the potential to sit as a great universal pick; it's genuinely bulky and has a situationally great typing for raids, and it also has a solid offensive presence, meaning this thing could potentially work offensively or defensively with ease... but then we encounter the same problem that Ho-oh faced for years after its initial release: its Fast Moves.

Ho-oh completely lacks a 0.5 second Fast Move to generate energy with, and it's not making any great waves dropping Psychic or Steel Type Max Moves. Add to that the fact that Incinerate is objectively bad for Max Battles due to how slow it is, as well as the fact that Hidden Power doesn't change Max Move types and is always the Normal Type Max Strike, and it becomes clear that Ho-oh is... flawed.

Honestly, the best utility of Dynamax Ho-oh is sitting on the bench and switching in when the team's tank has generated enough energy to allow it to drop a Max Flare, but there are ultimately better options for this exact job.

  • Incinerate is a horrible move for energy generation, but it's also the only way for Ho-oh to throw out Max Flare.
  • Steel Wing and Extrasensory are the best options for defensive play, and can be used for Max Steelspike and Max Mindstorm respectively, but they're not objectively great.
  • Hidden Power isn't worth considering. It's slow, and it only launches Max Strike regardless of its type.
